WADDELL, Ariz. — The White Tanks Flood Retarding Structure No.3 North Inlet Channel (NIC) near White Tank Mountain Regional Park was dedicated today at an on-site ribbon-cutting ceremony led by District 4 County Supervisor Max W. Wilson. The $6.3 million NIC project is a regional flood control facility that provides enhanced flood hazard protection to a 55-square-mile area of the rapidly growing West Valley. As a part of the Flood Control District of Maricopa County's White Tanks Area Drainage Master Plan, the NIC will provide flood protection from a 100-year flood event for approximately 118 properties east of the Beardsley Canal.
The primary flood control feature of the NIC project is a one-mile-long channel along the east side of the Beardsley Canal from Olive Avenue to Northern Avenue with suitable crossover structures at both Olive and Northern. Additional improvements include erosion control on the Beardsley Canal at Cholla Wash through the installation of a soil cement bank.
"Days like this are special," said Wilson. "After all of the planning, budgeting and administrative work to get this project started, I am excited to see what the flood control experts have created. The finished project is something we certainly need considering the significant development and changes happening here in the West Valley."
The NIC was a joint project between the Flood Control District of Maricopa County, the Maricopa Water District (owner of the Beardsley Canal) and the Maricopa County Department of Transportation. The project design consultant was Kirkham Michael and the contractor was Ames Construction, with oversight by the construction management branch of the Flood Control District.
