PHOENIX — The Flood Control District's Operations & Maintenance Division (O&M) is responsible for ensuring the reliability, safety and structural integrity of the District's 80 flood control facilities throughout Maricopa County. Sometimes, though, the division's field crews are called upon to perform special tasks.
On March 18, 2008, the District received a notice from the office of the Arizona State Mine Inspector regarding a citizen’s observation of a hazardous abandoned open mine shaft located near Cave Buttes Dam Dike #1. The Real Estate Division and O&M contacted the mine inspector to pinpoint the exact location of the open shaft on District property.
On April 2, an O&M two-man crew from the north satellite yard was dispatched to repair the approximately six-foot-wide, 75-foot-deep open mine shaft. The shaft was filled in with existing debris material left over from the original shaft excavation. Once the mine shaft was completely filled in, the site was re-graded to match the surrounding terrain. On April 8, a state mine inspector approved the repair and complimented the District on its prompt corrective action.
