The Flood Control District communicates with Maricopa County residents through a public outreach program that educates, informs and supports the community at large.
Public Service Announcements
The most visible public outreach efforts are television public service announcements (PSA) on KPNX-TV Channel 12, and safety information on the District Web site and at azcentral.com.
Public Meetings
Public meetings are hosted by the District to inform Maricopa County residents about the various District projects, studies and plans that are being undertaken in the residents' local area. At these public meetings, residents are able to speak with District project managers and staff to express their opinions and concerns about a project. In turn, the District takes that public feedback into consideration when designing the project.
Home Shows and Expos
The District operates a booth at the annual Phoenix Home Improvement and Garden Show where the public has the opportunity to learn about flood safety, flood control and other District services. Residents may also learn if their current property or a property they intend to buy is located in a floodplain/floodway. The District attends the Scottsdale Area Association of REALTORS® Annual EXPO. Real estate professionals at the EXPO learn about flood insurance requirements and the flood control process as it applies to real estate.
School Presentations
Each year, the District's public information office manager gives presentations on flood safety to elementary school students in grades four through six in approximately 150 elementary schools.
Charitable Causes
The District is proud to be a direct supporter of the Head Start program in the Murphy School District in south-central Phoenix. Head Start is a national program that enhances the social and mental development of children through the provision of educational, nutritional, social and other services.
In 1996, Flood Control District employees adopted 100 Head Start children at one school. Today, we support four schools, donating and delivering classroom supplies, backpacks, toys, food and other items to 280 students and 28 teachers and their aides.
