The Flood Control District has developed a flood control strategy that relies on flood control structures and drainage systems to work in conjunction with each other. Effective flood control also depends on the cooperation of County citizens in adhering to established regulations regarding the use and maintenance of washes, channels and other drainage features.
Keep Drainage Systems Clear of Debris and Structural Improvements
Two important guidelines to remember are:
- Do not place any debris (including grass clippings and other yard waste, garbage, and dirt and gravel fill) in stormwater inlets, ditches, washes, channels or other drainage systems. Dumping into the drainage system is illegal and easily creates blockages that may result in flooding.
- Do not develop or make improvements on land in flood hazard areas. Always contact your community's Planning and Development department or Maricopa County before you make any improvements on your property, such as grading, filling or construction. The improvements you have planned may require a permit.
Adhere to Drainage Regulations
The Drainage Regulations for Maricopa County establish the parameters for drainage system design and maintenance, regulation enforcement and violation penalties.
Violations of drainage regulations may include, but are not limited to:
- improper drainage system design and/or maintenance
- dumping of any kind in a drainage system
- failure to receive a Drainage Clearance, final drainage inspection or elevation inspection prior to securing a final building permit and building a structure
Residents of the County can help the District control illegal or destructive activity in and around drainage systems. If you see evidence of illegal dumping, vandalism or other damage, immediately notify the District using the online Structure Maintenance Public Concern Form.
