The Flood Control District's operations & maintenance personnel are responsible for mosquito control only on flood control structures and property owned and maintained by the District. For information on mosquito control elsewhere in the County, visit the Maricopa County Environmental Services Department Web site at: http://www.maricopa.gov/ENVSVC/WATER/VECTOR.ASP.
Physical, biological and chemical methods are used by the District for mosquito abatement. Physical methods prevent the development of mosquito breeding sites such as shallow pools of standing water. District flood control structures, including water detention basins and drains, are engineered to prevent water from pooling for longer than 72 hours. Pumps may also be implemented where water collects into pools. Biological controls feature the use of mosquito-eating fish in areas of permanent bodies of water. Chemical controls include the use of herbicides, and these controls are used sparingly and only when absolutely necessary. Larvicides kill mosquitoes before they become adults and disperse, while adulticides and fogging are used to control widespread adult mosquito outbreaks.
The District is also the only agency within Maricopa County to offer in-house bee removal on District-owned properties. Africanized bees have become a serious threat to humans and an environmental concern.
