Since its inception in 1959, the District has led or participated in more than 100 capital construction projects to mitigate flooding hazards within Maricopa County, along with numerous regional planning studies and floodplain delineations.
Recently, the District has incorporated context-sensitive design in its projects wherever practical through a landscape and aesthetics program, and in all cases, projects involve a thorough review of potential environmental impacts.
Once constructed, projects are operated and maintained by partnering municipalities, private interests or the District's operations and maintenance staff. Among the structures operated and maintained by the District are 22 jurisdictional flood control dams. Due to their complexity, these dams require an additional level of oversight, managed by the District's dam safety program.
