- ALERT - an acronym for Automated Local Evaluation in Real Time. It represents a set of protocols and standards developed by the National Weather Service in the 1970s for the manufacture and operation of compatible flood warning equipment.

- Historic Data - ALERT data that was collected in the past, has been quality checked, published and stored.
- Meta - data specific to data. In our case, meta data for the ALERT stations includes things like the station or sensor installation date, latitude, longitude, elevation, etc.
- Precipitation - any liquid or solid that falls from the air. In our case it pertains to rainfall, snow, sleet or hail.
- Pool-level - the stage/elevation/level of water behind a dam or in a detention basin.
- Raw Data - ALERT data as it is stored in the database. It is not statistically altered or grouped into time periods.
- Real-time Data - ALERT data that was collected in the recent past, has not been quality checked or published, and is subject to change.
- Sensor - an instrument installed at a Station that measures some environmental parameter, like rainfall, water-level, temperature, wind speed, etc.
- Station - a collection of sensors and the hardware to make them function, usually located on the same platform.
- Streamflow - flowing water in a stream, creek, wash, gulch, river or channel.
