Heat Index

Flood Warning issues a customized Heat Stress Indicator from May through September. The indicator gives a warning for Low, Moderate, High or Extreme heat stress conditions. Heat stress can lead to dangerous heat-related illnesses, from heat exhaustion to the often-fatal heat stroke.

How does the Heat Stress Indicator work?

Our lead forecaster evaluates the weather conditions that can lead to heat stress, including above-average temperatures, high humidity, clear skies and very light winds. Heat stress can be even more dangerous on the second or third day, so the number of consecutive days with extreme conditions is also important.

Those most at risk for heat stress include outdoor workers, the elderly, the homeless, the very young and those in poor health. However, if extreme conditions happen suddenly or reach severe levels, anyone could be at risk.
