Drainage Design Management System for Windows Version 4.1.9
  Released on June 11, 2009

New Features of DDMSW 4.1.9

In this version the ESRI MapObject component is replaced by another shape file process component to free the users from the dependence of the ESRI software who are to use the shape file related functions inside the DDMSW. In the previous DDMSW version the users have to have the ESRI software installed on their computers in order to run shape file related functions. Further the ESRI software version has to be matching with the version the DDMSW map module is compiled in order to make DDMSW map module operate properly. This will potentially cause some problem when either the users upgrade their ESRI software version or DDMSW is recompiled with new ESRI version.

This version allows the users to bring in the customized QI values into the DDMSW.

Installation Procedures for DDMSW 4.1.9

Step 1 Backing Up Old DDMSW Projects

Step 1.1 If you do not have the previous version of DDMSW on your computer or do not need the projects developed under the previous version of DDMSW, you can directly go to Step 2. If you have the previous version of DDMSW and you need to preserve those projects, please proceed as follows.

Step 1.2 For DDMSW 3.3.2 or above version backup, launch DDMSW and then go to File => Project Management => Backup Project => Select a Project => click on "Backup" button. For DDMSW 2.1.0 backup, launch DDMSW 2.1.0, and then go to File => Management => check Backup Project in Action frame => select the project you are to back up in the Project frame => click on the "Backup" button.

Step 1.3 Repeat Step 1.2 to back up all old DDMSW projects. The backup projects will be saved in zip format to the "backup" sub folder under DDMSW installation folder.

Step 1.4 Copy the backup projects in zip format to a folder outside the previous version DDMSW installation folders (note: later after the DDMSW 4.1.9 is installed, all zip files need to be imported back into DDMSW 4.1.9). We always recommend saving the backup projects on a different computer for storage purposes.

Step 2 Installing DDMSW 4.1.9

If you already have DDMSW 2.1.0 or lower version installed on your computer, a full installation of DDMSW 4.1.9 is required. If you already have DDMSW 3.3.2 or above version installed on your computer, you have the options of either installing full version DDMSW 4.1.9, or upgrading the previous version of DDMSW to DDMSW 4.1.9 by running the upgrade patch. See "Upgrading the old DDMSW to DDMSW4.1.9" at the bottom of this page for details on how to do an upgrade. We recommend the full installation of DDMSW 4.1.9. You can have all versions of DDMSW installed on one computer if you want to compare the results by different versions.

Step 2.1 Right-click here and choose "Save Target As" to download the self-extracting file FCDMCINSTALL419.EXE to a temporary folder (for example, c:\ddms419download) on your computer.

Step 2.2 Double-click on FCDMCINSTALL419.EXE to self-extract files in the temporary folder (for example, c:\ddmsw419download). Due to the size of this self-extract file, it might take a few minutes to extract all the files in the package depending on the processing speed of the end user’s computer. Don’t terminate the self-extraction process prematurely. A message box will pop up when all the files are successfully extracted. Proceed to the next step only after all the required files are extracted.

Step 2.3 Locate and double-click Setup.exe in the temporary folder (for example, c:\ddmsw419download) to install DDMSW 4.1.9. A warning message will be displayed to allow you to change a folder instead of using the default installation folder.

Step 2.4 Click on "Change..." button to create a new installation folder for the DDMSW 4.1.9. Under "Folder name:" text box, you can type a new installation folder name.

Step 2.5 After the installation folder is selected or created, follow the installation process to finish the installation. The installation package will guide you through the rest of the steps.

Step 3 Launching DDMSW 4.1.9

After DDMSW 4.1.9 is installed, launch DDMSW 4.1.9 by clicking on the shortcut in Start Menu (Start Menu => Programs => FCDMC => ST => DDMSW4), or directly click on DDMSW shortcut (DDMSW4) on desktop.

If you already have the previous version of DDMSW on your computer before the installation of DDMSW 4.1.9, the shortcut in Start Menu or on the desktop is replaced with DDMSW 4.1.9 shortcut. If you want to use the previous version of DDMSW, you must manually create a shortcut for the previous version of DDMSW. To create a shortcut for the previous version of DDMSW, go to the installation folder for DDMSW and find stl.exe file. Right-click on stl.exe and select "Create Shortcut." A shortcut called "Shortcut to stl.exe" will be created in the same folder. Right-click on "Shortcut to stl.exe" and select "Properties" to open a new window. At the "Start in:" text box, it should show the installation folder. For example, if your DDMSW 3.3.2 installation folder is C:\FCDMC\ST, the text box should show "C:\FCDMC\ST". To make the shortcut work, append "\Data" to the installation folder in the text box of "Start in:". Here, it is "C:\FCDMC\ST\Data" for this example. Now this shortcut can be used to launch DDMSW 3.3.2. This shortcut can be copied to the desktop to be used later. This procedure is also documented in the DDMSW manual.

Step 4 Initializing DDMSW 4.1.9

Step 4.1 After launching DDMSW 4.1.9 in the above step, click on the "OK" button on "Agreement" window if you agree with the disclaimer, then click on the "OK" button on the "Select Project" window. On the menu bar click on Tools => Options to open the "Setup Options" window.

Step 4.1.1 Click on the "Browse" button on the right hand side of the "Help Reader" text box to locate Acrobat Reader, AcroRd32.exe on your computer (the actual location of the executable file may vary depending on which version of Acrobat product is installed on the computer. Normally it is located at C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat xx.\Reader\, where xx. is the version number) => Click on AcroRd32.exe and select the "OK" button. This step will set up the path to Acrobat PDF Reader (all help files are in PDF format). Click on "OK" and "Save" buttons.

Step 4.1.2 Upon the installation, "Programmer’s File Editor" (pfe32.exe) is automatically set to be the default word processing editor. You can change it to your preferred word editor by clicking on the browse button on the right-hand side of the "Editor" text box to locate the executable file of your preferred word editor, like notepad.exe, wordpad.exe, or winword.exe. Click on "OK" and "Save" buttons.

Click on "OK" button on the "Setup Options" window to exit the "Setup Options" window.

Step 4.2 Model Runs Path Set Up. This step will set up the path to model runs (where the hec-1 models will be run).

Step 4.2.1 If you have already created a project, then go to File => Select Project to open the "Select Project" window => Highlight the project you are to set up => Click on "OK" to close the "Select Project" window. Then go to File => Project Paths to open the "Project Paths" window => Click on the "Browse" button on the right-hand side of the "Model Runs Path" text box to select the folder for the Model Runs Path. (The default folder is "modlruns" under your installation folder, that is, if you install DDMSW 4.1.9 under C:\FCDMC419\ST, then the default model run folder should be C:\FCDMC419\ST\modlruns\. But you can select a different folder on your computer.)

Step 4.2.2 If you are going to create a new project, then go to File => New Project to open the "Select Project -- Add" window to set up and save the new project. Then go to File => Project Paths as is indicated in the above step to set up the project path.

Step 5 Importing the Old Projects

Step 5.1 If there are any backup files (in zip format) from the previous version of DDMSW (see Step 1), you can import them into DDMSW 4.1.9 now. Go to File => Project Management to open the "Project Management" window => Import Project radio button => "Import" button => locate the folder which contains the backup projects you are going to import from => highlight the project (in zip file format) => click on "OK" to import it into DDMSW 4.1.9.

Step 5.2 If you have more than one project to import, repeat Step 5.1 to import the others.

Upgrading the previous DDMSW to DDMSW 4.1.9

Although a full installation of DDMSW 4.1.9 is highly recommended, you can still upgrade the previous version of DDMSW to DDMSW 4.1.9. However, your older version of DDMSW software will be replaced by DDMSW 4.1.9 after the upgrade but the data will be preserved. We highly recommend backing up the project data from the older version DDMSW before you do the upgrade.

Step 1 Right-click here and choose "Save Target As" to download the self-extract file FCDMCPATCH419.EXE to the installation folder of the previous version DDMSW (By default, the installation folder of the previous version DDMSW is C:\FCDMCxxx\ST, where ‘xxx’ is the version number. To make sure this is the right folder, you can check if there is an executable file called "stl.exe" in this folder.)

Step 2 Double-click on FCDMCPATCH419.EXE to self-extract files in the installation folder of the older DDMSW. Due to the size of this executable file, it might take a few minutes to extract all the files in the package depending on the processing speed of end user’s computer.

Step 3 An information message box pops up which reads "All items for DDMSW Patch were successfully extracted" once the upgrade process is finished.

Step 4 When DDMSW 4.1.9 is launched for the first time after the upgrade, users will be prompted if they want to load the new sample projects in. The users can choose to load them, or they can load them later.
