The Flood Control District of Maricopa County’s STEM Curriculum provides lessons which are intended to supplement current curriculum that supports Earth’s water standards. All of the lessons have been developed in alignment with Arizona Science Standards.
This curriculum provides elementary and middle school teachers with inquiry-based, hands on lessons that will assist in introducing meteorology, emergency planning, and engineering concepts to students. Additional grade levels are being developed, so check back or modify one of the current lessons for your students.
The lessons are a resource for you and can be changed or modified to fit the needs of your students. Feel free to use all or just some of the lessons provided. There are resource kits available with materials necessary for the hands-on components of the lessons. Contact our Outreach Coordination Liaison, Ellen Spielman to reserve a kit.
Each grade level unit includes:
Student pre and post assessments
Power Point Slides
Instructions for each hands-on activity
Links to websites, videos, and interactive tools
Resource Kits (available on request)
Teacher Feedback Forms
Flood Simulation Model - NOW VIRTUAL
The Interactive Flood Simulation Model is a high point of our STEM curriculum. Students love watching the water move down the river and teacher love how well it portrays flooding. This experience is now available virtually! Use the video below to show students the model or contact Outreach Coordination Liaison, Ellen Spielman for a live Zoom demonstration.
